A minimum of thirteen individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
