Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
